The daily number of new coronavirus cases in Arizona is less than 1,000 for the first time in four days.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported Monday 789 additional cases of coronavirus and three more known deaths.

That increases the statewide death toll to 1,047 and the case total to 27,678.

But the past three days, more than 1,000 new infections were reported. Health officials had reported more than 1,500 new COVID-19 cases on Friday — by far the highest daily count since the outbreak began in March.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
