A 77-year-old resident of Surprise, Arizona, was the recipient of the 500,000th dose at State Farm Stadium yesterday. After two months of administering shots, the Glendale site is responsible for 20% of the 2.5 million+ COVID-19 vaccine doses given across the state since early December.
The Arizona Department of Health Services says 9,000 shots are administered every 24 hours at the location. A total of 2,276,870 vaccines have been administered since March 15.
“The facility has accounted for approximately 20 percent of the doses administered in Arizona to date, and according to data collected by Bloomberg, the venue has issued more vaccines than 50 individual countries,” ADHS said in a press release.
According to a press release from Doug Ducey, Arizona’s mass vaccination sites have been championed as a national model by President Joe Biden. Researchers at the Belfer Center at Harvard University have given the state an ‘A’ grade in vaccine response, including categories of vaccines per capita and time to vaccinate those eligible. Gov. Ducey and ADHS Director Dr. Cara Christ have been working on programs to expand vaccinations to underserved communities and at-risk individuals who still haven’t received the vaccine. The two leaders and community leader AP Powell held a virtual town hall meeting on March 9 to answer questions from individuals in underserved communities across the state.
Governor Ducey posted, “500,000 doses and counting! Way to go, @StateFarmStdm! And thank you to the medical and health care professionals, volunteers, @AZDHS, @AZNationalGuard, and everyone at the vaccination site working to protect Arizonan.”
